Smog check questions, answered straight.
What is a STAR certified smog check station?
STAR is a certification program run by California's Bureau of Automotive Repair. Stations have to meet higher inspection-quality standards to earn it, and BAR keeps reviewing their performance to let them keep it. Only STAR stations are allowed to inspect and certify certain vehicles.
How do I know if I need a STAR station?
Your DMV registration renewal notice will tell you. It reads either “Smog Certification Required” or “Smog Certification Required at a STAR station.” If yours names a STAR station, a regular smog shop cannot certify your vehicle — no matter what they charge or how close they are.
What is a directed vehicle?
A directed vehicle is one the state has flagged to be inspected at a STAR station. The DMV notes it on your renewal notice. Only STAR stations can inspect and certify these vehicles, regardless of where the station is located.
What is a gross polluter?
A gross polluter is a vehicle that failed a smog check with emissions well above the legal limit. Once a vehicle carries that designation, it has to be certified at a STAR station.
